Crisis of the Generals (元帥の危急, Gensui no Kikyū) is the 4th volume of Katsura Hoshino's D.Gray-man.[1][2]
Summary
"Allen starts to question the Black Ministry about the "Clan of Noah" and the reason he became an Exorcist. With his left eye injured and incapable of detecting akuma, he has come to understand the constant fear of not knowing whether the person he is talking to is truly human! Despite his confusion, Allen is sent on a mission to seek out his master, Cross, one of the Marshals of the Black Ministry, and find out why the akuma have suddenly started targeting leaders of the Ministry."
Author's Note
"The picture you saw here in Vol. 3 was of my editor, which I used a computer to alter and make him look like Komui. It is not a picture of myself. My editor was at a loss for words. And what you see above is a portrait of Katsura Hoshino drawn by my older sister."

- Komui's Discussion Room, vol. 1–5 *answered by Allen
- Discussion Room Vol. 1
- "If Allen, Lala, Kanda, Lenalee, Lavi, and Bookman were to arm-wrestle, who would win?" – Allen thinks one of the girls would win because he wouldn't use his full power against them, but that he would beat the others.
- "Why does General Cross dislike the Black Order?" – Allen dodges the question.
- Allen's head was wrapped in Chapter 1 to hide his white hair.
- Discussion Room Vol. 2
- "Why does Kanda call Allen 'bean sprout'?" – Allen doesn't know.
- "Just how deeply is General Cross in debt?" – Allen dodges the question.
- Allen's eyes are silver-gray (銀灰色 ginkaishoku). Sometimes Hoshino and the editor have fun with the color pages and make them look blue or red, but Allen's eyes are officially silver-gray.
- "What do people in the Order do about baths? Do all the living quarters have baths?" – The rooms do not have baths. (See next entry)
- Discussion Room Vol. 3
- Allen shows the men's bath of the Black Order. (See image below) The baths were put in during Komui's renovations when he became chief. Living quarters previously had showers. Occassionally, Komui adds unknown substances to the bath.
- Discussion Room Vol. 4
- "What kind of girls do Kanda and Allen like?" – Allen likes girls who are good cooks. Allen offers a weak guess about Kanda liking someone who can make soba.
- "Do they have girlfriends?" – Allen doesn't have time for that. Then jokes that Kanda's in love with his sword Mugen.
- Jerry can cook almost anything and it's all delicious.
- Allen doesn't know of any other ways to wake up Komui besides saying "Lenalee's getting married."
- Allen doesn't know how often Komui cleans his desk, but notes that his desk was cleared as part of the clean up after Komlin's rampage. It was messy the next day.
- Discussion Room Vol. 5
- "What does Allen think of Lenalee's tantalizingly short skirt?" – Allen thinks all men like miniskirts, but wonders if she gets cold sometimes.
- The science team makes the Black Order's uniforms, and asks them what designs they'd like. Allen wanted a hood so Timcanpy could hide somewhere (and to hide his white hair).
- The cat that had Timcanpy in Volume 2's author's note is Hoshino's cat Koro.
- "How many Valentine's Day chocolates did you receive? Who got the most?" – Allen got the most with 115.
Trivia
- The Japanese volume comes with a removable dust jacket of Lavi, and the flap folded under the cover has Hoshino's author note. The front cover of the volume underneath is an illustration of Bookman.
- The English volume does not have a dust jacket, instead making the jacket's design the actual front cover. The illustration of Bookman is on the back cover, and the author's note is a page within the volume.
